Do you have a technological solution to meet the challenges of the public sector? Apply for AWS Moonshot Days supported by Headstart

Less than two years ago, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country witnessed how the startup ecosystem partnered with the government to address the pandemic-induced challenges that had arisen. turned into a national crisis. While many have developed new innovations, some have pivoted their current solutions to address the current problem – from crowd monitoring, governance, identification and tracking solutions to healthcare assistive devices. While collaboration between government and startups was increasingly on an upward trend, the impact had not been so clearly visible to the public eye until then. The pandemic has highlighted how startup-government collaboration can tackle complex and pressing challenges in a much more agile and impactful way than if they had to do it alone.

A “Moonshot” to generate impact

This path to creating solutions for the public sector has traditionally not been easy for startups. But the on-the-ground experience of startups, investors, and governments over the past few years has shown that positive change is afoot in the public sector. With the right kind of ideas, networks, and capital, startups, investors, and governments can come together to transform public services.

Building a comprehensive system and support structure to enable disruptive innovation in the public sector domain is an initiative of AWS and Headstart.

AWS Moonshot Days powered by Headstart is a platform that will bring startups, investors, and government together. The initiative aims to identify innovative startups that create disruptive solutions for the public sector domain and support projects in the government, education, non-profit and healthcare sectors.

Startup innovation coupled with public sector mission

Held in a physical format, AWS Moonshot Days will be hosted in 10 cities across India in April and May 2022. Selected startups will pitch their ideas and solutions to investors, government agencies, and ecosystem players for grants, investments, and projects. These startups will then be shortlisted and will have access to AWS credits up to $100,000, technical assistance for cost and performance optimization, testing new ideas with Amazon’s innovation process as work back and Digital Innovation Workshops, access technology and subject matter expertise while researching industry solution. Startups will also receive Go-To-Market support to jointly showcase and support the solution to larger enterprises. With AWS Partner status and access to Headstart Boosters, startups will also have access to the AWS Partner Network portal as well as resources and tools from partners such as Canva, Qapita, Pepper Content and many more.

We are launching Moonshot Days to identify startups in impact zones with disruptive ideas – whether at the ideation stage or early revenue stage. The goal is to create a platform where startups can pitch their solution and get mentorship from AWS and our customers/partners on domain expertise, scalable and secure technology, business acumen, and more. We are supported by Headstart Network Foundation – India’s largest volunteer-led startup community – in running this program in several cities across the country. Different cities will also see the participation of stakeholders from government, VC community, etc. to enable innovation at scale for the Indian public sector, Deepti DuttHead of Strategic Initiatives, AWS Public Sector India.

Last year, in July 2021, AWS launched AWS Public Sector Startup Ramp in India – a new program to help early-stage public sector-focused technology startups build solutions on AWS.

When startups are able to break into the public sector, the opportunity is great for both startups and government and related agencies. “The benefits are symbiotic. For startups, integrating government as a customer translates to impact at scale. For public sector bodies, agencies, and organizations, startups bring the technology and expertise to address hitherto overlooked challenges and also bring faster, more user-centric services,” shares Vaniya DangwalHead of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships, Headstart.

And Indian VCs, incubators and other organizations are adding oil to the initiative – Ankur Capital, Anthill Ventures, 100X.VC, Indian Angel Network, AIC Shiv Nadar University, among others.

A shared commitment

As the country continues to work on digitizing public sector services – tackling challenges around healthcare, education, compliance, governance – it is evident that the startup ecosystem could play a huge role and impact some of the most diverse and critical issues facing the country. Today, it is no longer just companies that are required to future proof their solutions, but governments, agencies, organizations and public sector decision makers are increasingly realizing the need to modernize the way they operate, adapt to changing circumstances, think on their feet, and find scalable solutions.

As the public sector increasingly turns to the startup community for disruptive innovation, AWS Moonshot Days offers the opportunity to leverage startup innovation to impact the lives of billions of people.
